A new €250,000 urban sports track is to be developed within Letterkenny’s Bernard McGlinchey Town Park.
The proposed ‘pump track’ will be located on the site of the old adventure play park which has been removed.
Co-funded through the North West Regional Assembly and a combined allocation from Donegal County Council and Donegal Sports Partnership, the track will cater for different types of bikes, skateboards, scooters, roller skates and longboards, aimed at beginners to intermediate level.
A pump track is a small looping track that can be ridden continuously without pedalling. Momentum is gained by pumping out of bumps and corners.
While there are quite a number of pump tracks in the North, this will be the first of its kind in Donegal.
Dominic McGlinchey is a youth worker with Donegal Youth Service. He said the Youth Service has witnessed a growing interest among young people arriving to its drop-in session on skateboards, BMX style bikes and scooters.
“The new track will provide opportunities for more local young people to become good enough to compete on the world and Olympic stages and for many others there will be the opportunity to exercise, de-stress, and find friends with a similar interest,” Mr McGlinchey added.
