Public urged not to approach seal pup spotted in Fanad

THE public is being urged not to approach a seal pup that was spotted on a beach in Fanad by a woman out walking.

Seal Rescue Ireland was contacted after a woman was walking on Ballyhiernan Bay on Wednesday. The organisation is urging the public to contact them with any sightings of the young pup.

“The pup started to head back into the water once it saw us approach it. I spoke to a member of Seal Rescue Ireland who said the pup would likely go into the water for a while and then head back to the beach to rest,” said the woman on social media.

“I went back to the beach again last night (I am based in Downings) but the pup wasn’t there. Seal Rescue Ireland told me just to flag with local residents if they see the seal pup back on the beach to give them a call. I think they are concerned it is a very small pup and may need some attention.

“Their advice is if people see the seal pup to not approach it or try herd it into the water. Just give them a call and explain the sighting and the general whereabouts of the pup.”

Seal Rescue Ireland can be contacted through their website  www.sealrescueireland.org/found-a-seal/  or by calling 087 195 5393.
