Public meeting on Palestine

By Evelyn Cullen

HUNDREDS of people are expected to turn out on Thursday evening in Annagry to hear the Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland, Dr. Jilan Wahba Abadalmajid, speak at a public meeting.

The ambassador was invited by Independent councillor Michéal Choilm mac Giolla Easbaig who said the event is “hugely important for us as a community to show our solidarity to the people of Palestine, and do what we can to support them”.

Dr. Wahba Abadalmajid will report on what’s happening on the ground in Palestine and speak about her role as ambassador, as well as the long-standing relationship between West Donegal, the embassy in Dublin and Palestine.

“She won’t be the first, second, third or even fourth Palestinian ambassador to visit west Donegal” said Mr Mac Giolla Easbuig speaking of the historical ties.

The event will be chaired by Rachel Ní Ghallachóir with support from Ciara McNulty, two community activists described by Cllr Mac Giolla Easbaig as capable, independent women with a passion for international solidarity, social change and freedom.

“We’ve had the Palestinian flag flying proudly outside our chamber for a year and a half now, clearly showing our support for their struggle for independence,” he said.

“Something we know well about in Ireland, having experienced and continue to experience first-hand the wrath of British imperialism in our country.”

Cllr Mac Giolla Easbaig said he would like to thank his fellow councillors for supporting his motion to invite the ambassador.

The meeting in the town hall – Scioból an Phobail – will start at 7pm and should anyone have difficulty finding Scioból an Pobail, which is located on a rural lane off the main thoroughfare, they are welcome to call Cllr Mac Giolla Easbiug on 085 804 2050.
