A protest will be held this Saturday to try and overturn the planned closures of Bunbeg and Brinalack Post Offices following An Post’s announcement today that it intends to push ahead with the closure of a third facility in Burtonport.
Despite a groundswell of opposition from local residents in the area, An Post has confirmed that an appeal against the planned closure of Burtonport has been rejected.
Independent Councillor Micheal Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig has this evening criticised the decision to shut what he has described as a vital community facility.
He said Saturday’s protest would be to try and protect all post offices now earmarked for closure in west Donegal.
“It is clear and evident now that the submission put forward by the local community was not enough to head off the closure of this vital service. This closure will make people unemployed and will visit further hardship on a community already facing huge difficulties and it is down to the neo-liberal policy of not only this Government but previous Governments.”
Accusing successive Governments of “failing west Donegal”, Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig said it was important people took a stand against the plans to shut Burtonport’s Post Office.
“Since the foundation of the State of the 26 counties, successive Governments have failed to invest in any meaningful infrastructure for west Donegal nor create any sustainable employment.
“I can conclude then that politicians, not all of them but many, have failed rural Ireland and the Gaeltacht community and we are calling on people on Saturday to come out and take a stand, not just for our generation but the generation that will follow us,” Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig added.
Saturday’s protest will be held at Bunbeg crossroads at noon. Everyone is welcome to attend.
