PROTESTERS from a number of groups gathered this morning outside Letterkenny Courthouse where almost 250 repossession cases were listed.
They represented organisations such as Lay Litigation Ireland, The Hub, The Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP), Donegal Water Warriors and Letterkenny Against Water Charges.
Ms Valerie McNulty, a volunteer with The Hub, said she was there to hand out information leaflets to defendants facing repossession.
Ms McNulty, who travelled from Ballyshannon, said she was at the same court every month and noticed that the numbers listed for repossession are rising with each sitting of the Circuit Court.
“The numbers are rising every month – it’s unreal,” she said.
“A lot of defendants do not know their rights, so we are here to inform them. Also, a large number of those on the list fail to turn up. That’s a major problem as it’s a case of ‘three strikes and you’re out’. People must come to court and, at least, represent themselves.”
