Protest march against school cuts

Dinny McGinley, TD.

BY SEÁN P. FEENY
THE Chairman of a West Donegal Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) branch is calling on parents, teachers and members of the public to join them in a protest march in Gweedore tomorrow (Saturday) at 12noon.

The Gweedore and Cloughaneely branch of the INTO, Craobh an Earagail, has organised the protest in response to cuts in education announced in the Budget 2012.

Mr Seán Ó Dónaill, Cathaoirleach, said the idea for the march came following a delegation’s meeting with the Minister of State, Dinny McGinley TD.

“Following the announcements made in the Budget 2012 we organised a public meeting in Dungloe where members of the public and three INTO branches, South Donegal, Rosses and Gweedore/Cloughaneely met to discuss the issues.

“All our local public representatives attended apart from Mr McGinley, who said he wouldn’t attend a public meeting but would be willing to meet a delegation.

“And so delegation made up of parents and teachers met with Deputy McGinley in January and he said he would address our concerns with the Ruairi Quinn TD Minister for Education and Skills. Nothing seem to be happening nationally and so we decided to organise this march.”

Mr Ó Dónaill said this will most likely be the opportunity in the county for people concerned about the cutbacks to make themselves heard.

“We would encourage people from all over West Donegal and around the county to come and join us when we meet in Gweedore Industrial Estate at 12noon and will proceed to the office of Deputy McGinley,” said Mr Ó Dónaill.
