Protest held in Stranorlar over delayed school projects

FRUSTRATED students and teachers from Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí, Donegal Town gathered outside of Scoil Mhuire, Stranorlar as Minister for Education Norma Foley arrived for the schools official opening.

The protest is in response to the government decision to pause funding for school construction projects across the country.

Across the country 58 school projects going to tender or commencing construction have been halted.

Representatives from schools across Donegal who have been affected by the decision met with Education Minister Norma Foley in Letterkenny this morning.

Representatives from Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí attended the meeting. They have been waiting 24 years for a new school, in that time they have been operating out of second-hand prefabs.

In 2016 they were added to the building list and staff expected construction to commence in the first quarter of 2023.

There has been no progress and the school now fears they will lose their contractor.
