Protest demanding improved cancer services to be held outside LUH tomorrow

By Dionne Meehan

A DEMONSTRATION advocating for enhanced cancer services will take place outside Letterkenny University Hospital tomorrow, Saturday, April 26.

Organised by Clonmany woman, Roseena Toner, this protest will see crowds gather for a third time outside LUH to highlight the need for upgraded cancer services in the county.

Speaking to the Donegal News, Ms Toner, who is a cancer survivor, said LUH is being very much left behind when it comes to cancer services.

“It had been recommended that University Hospital Galway should be the centre of excellence,” she said.

“That means if you want cancer services, you have to go to Galway.

“This isn’t good enough when you have to travel over 249km from Letterkenny to Galway.

“We are campaigning to stop that happening.”

Ms Toner is calling on the local community to come out and support her campaign this weekend.

“This protest is about promoting Letterkenny and getting better cancer facilities in Letterkenny,” she said.

“The people of Donegal are not going to sit back and take this any longer, it is absolutely ridiculous that it has happened for so long.

“It is not practical for people to travel to Galway for treatment.

“I had to do it and it is not comfortable.

“It is horrible, traumatic and emotional.

“We need to stand together.

“Donegal has a population of around 167,000 people and we can’t have everyone tramping down the road to Galway.

“It is not on.”

The protest will take place outside Letterkenny University Hospital on Saturday, April 26 from 9am to 3pm.
