THE property market was strong in Donegal in the first month of this year with 68 houses/apartments sold totalling €11.65 million.
According to the Property Price Register from January 1 until February 2, 2024 the most expensive house in the county sold was in Drumbern near Milford for a recorded price of €1,074,160.
By comparison the cheapest property in the county sold during the same period was at St Mary’s Road in Buncrana which sold for €25,000.
Houses in between these two prices sold for varying amounts showing there were still cheap properties to be purchased in Donegal.
Of the 68 house sale prices recorded for the period, 20 of those were sold for €100,000 or less possibly reflecting the availability of the vacant or derelict house grants now available.
A house in Carrowen, Burt sold for €50,000, a house in Newtownhamilton in Carrigans went for €45,000 and a house in Glencolmcille went for €55,000.
At the other end of the price spectrum a house near Burnfoot sold for €530,000, a house in Cambelstown, Letterkenny sold for €440,000 and a house in Greencastle sold for €350,000.
According to local estate agent Brendan McGee of Franklin’s some of the lower priced properties may be accounted for with the grants now available for renovation but could also reflect parents transferring property to children at a knock-down price.
“A lot of the lower price stuff does not present itself to the open market. We estate agents have tools available to us which shows which properties sold on the market and what sold without going to market. It is a valuation tool for estate agents,” he said.
