THIS was the day he had dreamed of.
And delighted Donegal manager Ray Durack did not hide his emotions after a great day for Donegal hurling.
“This is a fabulous day for Donegal hurling,” Durack beamed.
“This is the day I dreamed about and I have been in Donegal for 23 years. I have always dreamed if getting these Donegal lads playing in a higher level.
“These lads have been playing in Division Three of the National League for years. These boys are a part of history today,”.
And he saluted returned marksman Kevin Campbell who hit nine fine points.
He said: Kevin has always had all the skills.
“He was away abroad in college and missed out a bit but he is certainly back now with a bang. He has always had it and he really showed it when it really mattered.”
On a more sombre note Ray Durack confirmed that Donegal will be appealing the red card given to Jamesie Donnelly as the teams left the field at half-time.
“Jamesie is not a cynical player and he is not a silly player,” Durack said.
“It was a very hard call and I feel very sorry for him.
“He has worn the jersey with pride. I will be on the ball and I will fight it tooth and nail. There have been people who have got off with much mire serious offences.”
And he saluted the character of his charges.
“This team has great character as they showed in the Nicky Rackard Cup final last year.
“We went down a man and we still prevailed. It can be tougher to play against a team with an extra man.
“So we dropped Danny Cullen back and used the breeze. And we said at half-time that we would do it for Jamesie and we certainly did,”.
