Professor Brendan O’Leary of the University of Pennsylvania will be the keynote speaker during the 100th anniversary commemorations of the execution of the Drumboe Martyrs next month.
The Drumboe Commemoration Committee has outlined the expert speakers that will address the Spring School, to be held in the Villa Rose Hotel, Ballybofey on March 11.
The panellists will include Breandán MacSuibhne, a historian of society and culture in modern Ireland; Helen Meehan, past president of the Donegal Historical Society, Fearghal MacBloscaidh who teaches at St Mary’s University College, Belfast; Professor of Sociology at Maynooth University Linda Connolly; Dr Mary McAuliffe, Director of Gender Studies at UCD; award-winning oral historian and author Dr Tomás Mac Conmara and documentary filmmaker and writer Hilary Dully.
Key note speaker Brendan O’Leary is the Lauder Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr O’Leary was a political advisor to the British Labour Shadow Cabinet on Northern Ireland between 1987-8 and 1996-7, advising the late Kevin McNamara and the late Marjorie (“Mo”) Mowlam, shadow Secretaries of State for Northern Ireland.
He also advised Irish, British, and American ministers and officials, and the Irish-American Morrison delegation during the Northern Ireland peace process and appeared as an expert witness before the US Congress.
Speaking on behalf of the Drumboe Commemoration Committee, chairperson Maria Doherty said:“I am delighted that such a wide range of academic and local historians and other experts have confirmed their attendance at the upcoming Spring School.
“Many of the speakers are published authors and have contributed significantly to the development of research and knowledge on Irish history and the history of Donegal.
“The areas of expertise of the speakers range from in-depth knowledge of the local history of Donegal, the period of the Irish Revolution, the civil war and the current and future politics of Ireland.”
