CLLR Declan Meehan has welcomed updated timelines on a number of social housing developments across the Milford Electoral Area.
It follows information provided to him in response to a written question at this month’s Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District meeting.
Providing an update, the Council confirmed that works have now commenced on 10 social housing units in Tamney, Fanad, with construction underway and completion and handover to Donegal County Council expected by December 2026.
In Rossgarrow, Milford, plans for 12 social housing units (comprised of 1- and 2-bed apartments) are progressing, with the project currently awaiting utility connection approvals. Design work is scheduled to commence in spring 2026, with handover to the Council presently projected for July/August 2027.
Meanwhile, at Ard na Glaise in Kilmacrennan, a development of 20 social housing units is moving into the next phase, with the Council in the final stages of appointing a contractor. Construction is expected to begin in March 2026, with completion and handover to the Council scheduled for October 2027.
Welcoming the updates, Cllr Meehan said: “It is positive to see clear timelines now in place for these much-needed social housing developments across the district, and particularly encouraging that work has already commenced in Tamney.
“These projects will provide vital homes for individuals and families in our communities.”
However, Cllr Meehan stressed that further action is still required to address housing need in the area.
“While I welcome this progress, I will continue to push for additional housing schemes to be progressed as a matter of urgency,” he said.
“The demand for social housing remains significant, and we must ensure that further projects are brought forward without delay to meet the needs of those 232 families and individuals in the Milford Electoral Area currently on the housing waiting list.
“Most of what is planned in the Milford Electoral Area will not be completed until 2027, so we need to ensure we have a pipeline of projects to serve the entire area, but particularly where need is most acute such as Ramelton, Carrigart and Kerrykeel, as well as additional schemes in Milford and Kilmacrennan.”
