Progress on hospital fire-proofing after five year delay

FIVE years after fire proofing works at Letterkenny University Hospital were first to be carried out, Saolta say “significant progress” is now being made.

A Saolta spokesperson told the Donegal News this week that the scope of works to address fire proofing in the hospital’s medical block is currently being agreed between the HSE Estates and the local Fire Authority.

“Significant progress on this scope has been made in the past few months and it is expected that this phase of the project will be completed in the next few months.”

“Following agreement with the local Fire Authority on the scope of these works, the project will progress to the next step (design stage) by HSE Estates and will follow the normal approvals process including consideration for funding by National HSE Estates,” Saolta told the Donegal News in response to our query on an update of safety works.

This newspaper previously revealed that work on fire proofing the hospital’s emergency department and medical block could not be carried out because of bed pressures.

The HSE originally made a commitment that work to fire proofing the new €24 medical block and emergency department and additional 72-bed unit would be carried out in 2017.

Saolta vowed to make fire safety a priority between the lifetime of their new Group Strategy running from 2019 to 2023, describing the fire safety works as  a “major capital development”.
