Probe following death of man in Donegal garda cell

AN investigation is underway after a man was found dead in the cell of a garda station in Donegal.

The man, who was aged in his 30s, was arrested on Thursday and was in garda custody when he was found unresponsive in a cell.

Assistance was immediately requested, however, despite receiving medical attention, the man was prounounced dead at the scene.

The incident has been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC).

A garda press office spokesperson confirmed the death of the man.

“On the evening of Thursday 27th June 2024, a man in his 30s who was in Garda custody at a Garda Station in Donegal was discovered unresponsive in a cell and urgent assistance was requested.

“Despite resuscitative attempts by medical personnel and first responders who attended, this male was later pronounced deceased.

“As per Garda Policy this matter has been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) under Section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.”
