Probation bond for man who slapped garda’s hand

A YOUNG Letterkenny man who resisted arrest and slapped a garda on their hand has been handed down a 12-month probation bond.

Letterkenny District Court heard how gardaí found Aidan McLaughlin (21) highly intoxicated and in a verbal altercation with staff at Voodoo Venue on Lower Main Street, Letterkenny on March 20, 2025.

McLaughlin of Roughpark, Letterkenny, resisted arrest, the court was told. He also “squared up” to gardaí responding to the incident, and slapped a garda member on the hand.

McLaughlin was subsequently arrested and charged with Section 19 public order. He has a number of previous convictions including dangerous driving, the court was told.

Solicitor Mr Frank Dorrian said the young man had a difficult start to his adult years. Mr Dorrian pointed out that his client has stopped drinking since the incident. He added that his client has “tremendous promise and talent”.

In passing down sentencing, Judge Emile Daly said the 12-month probation bond was “for his benefit”.

The sentencing came with a warning that McLaughlin does not come to the adverse attention of An Garda Síochána, and if he does the court will proceed with a conviction.
