PRIVATE Sean Rooney is to be honoured today at the 75th anniversary of the United Nations at their headquarters in New York.
Pte Rooney (23), from Newtowncunningham, died on December 14, 2022 while carrying out UN peacekeeping duties in al-Aqbieh in southern Lebanon.
He was killed after being shot when the armoured vehicle he was in came under attack.
The ceremony is part of a series of events to mark the 75th anniversary of United Nations peacekeeping.
Irish Ambassador to the United Nations Fergal Mythen will receive the Dag Hammarskjöld medal on behalf of the family of Private Rooney.
A wreath will be laid at the Peacekeepers Memorial in the grounds of the UN compound by Secretary General António Guterres.
It will commemorate the 4,200 peacekeepers, including 91 Irish personnel, who have died.
