Independent TD for Donegal, Thomas Pringle, said he will not support the government’s motion of confidence in Tánaiste Leo Varadkar, expected for later today.
Deputy Pringle asked: “How can you have confidence in somebody who leaks official documents, undermining best practice of standards in public office?”’
Sinn Féin had brought forward a motion of no confidence in the Tánaiste, but in response the Government will table a counter motion of confidence in the Tánaiste, which the Dáil would take up first.
The motion is to be debated later today.
Deputy Pringle was at a meeting of the business committee yesterday where it was proposed that the Dáil move to the convention centre today for the motion. To maintain social distancing, the Dáil meets in the convention centre when all deputies are required to be present to vote.
But Deputy Pringle said this move should not have been necessary.
Deputy Pringle said: “There’s no reason why the Government couldn’t have put forward their motion to be taken on Wednesday, which means we wouldn’t have to move today.” He made that suggestion at the business committee meeting.
Deputy Pringle said the government’s tabling of a confidence motion will also mean less speaking time on the motion for the opposition.
