OUTGOING Independent TD Thomas Pringle has dismissed a prediction that the fifth seat in Donegal will come down to himself and 100% Redress Party candidate Charles Ward.
“I would say those predictions are wrong, they have been wrong before,” Mr Pringle told the Donegal News.
“The fifth seat could be between Charlie McConalogue and Charles Ward.”
Final tally figures put Mr Pringle on 6.87 per cent of the vote (5,334).
“My team are quite happy that I will be ok. When the transfers come in they will come in strongly towards me.
“Transfers are going to be important, where they come from and how they break down. I would be confident they will break down ok for me.
“John McNulty got a big vote in Kilcar and I would be fairly confident I would be getting 90 per cent of his transfers. I think it is looking like I will get transfers from Noel Jordan too, as well as the smaller candidates, such as he Green Party. I think I will pick up votes all round, which happened the last time too.”
Mr Prngle said he was not surprised that Fine Gael are not expected to retain their seat in Donegal.
“That was probably on the cards. We (my team) probably knocked on more doors than anyone in the whole campaign, and we knew Fine Gael weren’t figuring in the campaign. “It could be the fact of not having a national profile candidate in terms of a sitting TD.”
Mr Pringle said, if returned to Dail Eireann, he will be continue to be a strong voice for the county. He said a potential incoming government of Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Labour will have consequences for the defective concrete blocks scheme.
“By not having a change in government, the defective concrete blocks scheme is not going to change. That’s the sad outcome of this election.
