PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins spoke of the “devastating” consequences of the Famine in County Donegal at the weekend when he addressed the National Famine Commemoration in Milford.
The President unveiled a commemorative stone and he together with Cathaoirleach, Cllr Liam Blaney and Most Reverend Luis Mariano Montemayor, Apostolic Nuncio, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, each laid a wreath at the site where the workhouse once stood.
This was followed by a minute’s silence.
Recalling how the Irish Famine or An Gorta Mór – the Great Hunger was a cataclysmic event from our past he said it was a day for the people of this island to reflect.
