PREPARATIONS are underway for the first ever Letterkenny Pride.
The major event will be held in Letterkenny on August 19 with a parade and entertainment planned for throughout the town.
Pride is a celebration of diversity, it is a time to bring people together, and of course, a big day of fun.
But beyond that, it is about showing members of the LGBTQ+ community who otherwise might find themselves feeling marginalised, that they belong in this town, and in this county.
The event follows on from the success of Donegal’s first Pride events last year, Inishowen Pride and ‘Bród na Gaeltachta’, and member of the organising committee, Kayleigh Bowery said the Letterkenny event ‘is a long time coming’ and is particularly special this year as it is 30 years since homosexuality was decriminalised.
“The preparations are well underway for what is shaping up to be an exciting day of celebrations. A lot of work is involved, but we are very excited that we have such a strong team and so much support from our community,” she said.
“This event is a long time coming. This year marks 30 years since homosexuality was decriminalised in Ireland.
“The purpose of this event is to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community first and foremost but, also, to celebrate how far we have come as one community in that time,” said Kayleigh.
A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help organise the event and has already raised almost €1,000.
The festival will involve an afternoon of family fun, which will take place at An Grianan Theatre on Saturday, August 19, followed by the all-important parade.
There will also be lots of entertainment taking place throughout the town that evening. So far the response to the parade has been positive with many people voicing their support for the event.
“The response to Letterkenny Pride has been overwhelmingly positive. We have been inundated with requests from people who want to be involved and, also, with messages of love and support from all over the world. People are incredibly excited, as are we.
“We have set up a Go Fund Me and we would appreciate anyone that can donate to do so there, so that we can bring our vision for the day to life!
“Also, you may contact us at Letterkennypridefest@gmail.com.
“We would love to hear from you! Your support means everything,” said Kayleigh.
