PRE-REGISTRATION is now opened for a 5k run and walk in aid of former Finn Harps and Derry City player Mark Farren.

The event is being organised by the Finn Harps captain, Kevin McHugh, who is a former team-mate of the Greencastle man.

The 5k takes place in Killea on Saturday-week, February 8th. To pre-register, participants are asked to email markfarren5k@gmail.com and to include their name, age and club.

There is also a sponsor card for people to download at the bottom of this page while donations can also be made via PayPal using markfarren10@gmail.com

Farren is currently undergoing treatment for cancer, but this isn’t the first time he’s had to battle this devastating illness having first been diagnosed in 2008. He made an astonishing recovery and played for both Derry City and Glenavon before being forced to retire again last month.

McHugh has been taken aback by the interest in the event.

“It has been unbelievable – on Friday I actually had to charge the battery on my phone with the volume of people making contact with me about it,” he said.

As part of their pre-season preparations the Finn Harps Squad will be running the 5K.

McHugh said: “Mark Farren is a proud Donegal man and has been one of the most outstanding soccer players to ever come out of the county.”

Sponsors of the event include Finn Harps FC, Kernan’s Eurospar, PFAI, Lifford AC.

McHugh has thanked Killea FC for hosting the event and noted the support of Paul Duddy, the former League of Ireland referee from St Johnston. He said: “Paul has been a massive help in organising the logistics and basically getting the thing off the ground. He deserves a lot of credit for making this happen.

“We’re hoping that a big crowd turns out on the day. A lot of former team-mates have been on to lend their support and it would be great for a crowd to come out in support of Mark.”

Registration will take place at the Killea FC Club House at 9am with the run and walk beginning at 10.30am.
Prizes will be awarded and refreshments will be served afterwards in the club house and participants are encouraged to wear their club colours.
