PRAYERS will be said in Letterkenny this evening for two brothers, one of whom lost his life following the overnight fatal traffic collision in the town.
Anthony Gallagher died from his injuries in Letterkenny University Hospital this morning after he and his brother Martin were struck by a vehicle at Lower Main Street.
The incident happened at around 3am close to the brothers’ home at Charlie Daly Terrace in Ballymacool.
Martin Gallagher was this morning airlifted from Letterkenny University Hospital to Galway University Hospital where he continues to receive medical treatment for serious injuries.
Both men, who are in their 60s, are very well known in Letterkenny.
Anthony worked as a council ‘lollipop’ man and manned the crossing close to his home at the bottom of the Back Road.
As Garda investigations into the fatal collision continue, members of the community will gather for a candlelit vigil at 8pm this evening at Lower Main Street.
Today’s St. Patrick’s Day parade in the town was cancelled as a mark of respect.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the fatal collision to come forward.
]They are also asking any road users who may have camera footage and were travelling in the area between 2.30am and 3.30am this morning, to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
The driver of the car involved, a male aged in his late teens, was arrested at the scene.
