HAILSTONES pattered the public benches and the solicitors’ desk at 172-year-old Glenties District Court, prompting an apology from staff.
Court Clerk Connell Melley apologised to the public and explained a window had been damaged in the court and it would be fixed before the next court sits in February.
Despite a bitter wind blowing through the room at times – although the hail stopped – Judge Paul Kelly continued with proceedings.
At one stage he observed to a garda who was asked to go outside during one case: “Sorry garda, you will have to wrap up well.”
One solicitor left his seat to warm his hands at a radiator running alongside the back wall.
A woman solicitor kept her hands warm in the pockets of her overcoat.
Solicitor Patsy Gallagher remarked during one blast: “That’s new. It’s the first time I have been in court and it started hailing.”
