Donegal put in a spirited display last Sunday in MacCumhaill Park but Derry just had too much for them on the day.
It was hard to know what to expect going into the match as while Donegal had a decent win over Clare, facing the Ulster champions was always going to be a step up and so it proved.
It was a good day out in MacCumhaill Park with the sun shining and fans arriving in good time.
There were over eight thousand which is a decent crowd, but still a couple thousand short of what the Ballybofey venue would have held for big games over the last decade.
Maybe the team’s mixed form had a part to play in that or the Bank Holiday weekend, or perhaps the tickets are just too expensive for families at present.
Still those that went along got good value for money I felt and it was an entertaining match.
There was five points in it by full-time but I felt Donegal acquitted themselves quite well for the most part.
The goals were the crucial scores, and Derry have a real knack of finding the net.
They are at a more advanced stage than this new-look Donegal side, and I think that’s pretty evident at the moment.
But Donegal showed a lot of fight, and while you’re never happy when you’rebeaten, I think there were positives to take from it.
Oisin Gallen delivered a wonderful display, probably as good of an individual performance from a man in the green and gold jersey for a long, long time.
