Portsalon Pier and Bunbeg Harbour Pontoon officially opened by Minister Charlie McConalogue

Today marked the official opening of the newly refurbished Portsalon Pier and the Bunbeg Harbour Pontoon by Donegal Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue.

The projects, part of a broader €19.1 million investment across 23 capital projects in Donegal, saw significant financial backing.

A total of €1.7 million was spent on the extensive refurbishment of Portsalon Pier, while Bunbeg Harbour’s newly constructed pontoon came with a price tag of €967,000.

Both projects were supported by 95% funding from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

Speaking at the openings, Minister McConalogue highlighted the importance of the investment for the local communities, stating: “Today is a great day for Portsalon and Bunbeg and for the county of Donegal, with a combined spend of almost €2.7 million on two extremely important projects.”

The Minister stressed that the investment will foster sustainable growth and support local enterprise and tourism.

“The government continues to support sustainable and vibrant rural communities. We also continue to support local enterprise and employment and maximise our rural tourism and recreation potential,” he said.

Under the BALAMI Scheme 2022-2024, Donegal has received €19.6 million of the €35 million allocated nationally.

Minister McConalogue also noted the additional allocation of €12.7 million announced in February for Brexit-related projects, with €8.2 million designated for Donegal in 2024.

During the plaque unveiling at Portsalon, the Minister praised the local community’s understanding throughout the construction and noted the importance of the pier for the area’s economy and tourism.

“Portsalon Pier plays a crucial role in the local economy and its refurbishment is vital for the growth and sustainability of this harbour and the Portsalon community,” he said.

He also paid tribute to the late Seán McGettigan, a key figure behind the Portsalon project, acknowledging his contribution to the community.
