DONEGAL’S top garda has said a policing operation will be in place in Letterkenny on Saturday during an anti-immigration protest and a counter demonstration.
Garda Chief Superintendent Goretti Sheridan, pictured right, yesterday told the Donegal News that gardaí will be ready to respond should any escalations arise during the events.
The anti-immigration protest will commence at Market Square at 1pm, while the United Against Racism Donegal Group is to stage a counter-protest at the same location from 12pm.
While finer details to the policing plan were yesterday still being firmed up, Chief Superintendent Sheridan said there will be a visible garda presence.
“We’re developing a policing plan for the protest. Everyone is entitled to protest in a peaceful manner, and that’s what we’re hoping will happen on the day. If things escalate, then we will have to respond accordingly,” she said.
While social media platforms are indicating large crowds are expected to attend, Chief Superintendent Sheridan said this may not be the case on the day.
“We’re hoping the protests will be peaceful.”
