A post which has been incorporated into the surface of a narrow Letterkenny road has been described as an “accident waiting to happen”.
The wooden pole was left behind following recent works at Crievesmith in Oldtown to introduce a footpath.
But residents have expressed concerns that it could cause a serious crash, particularly at night time when visibility is reduced.
Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh told the Donegal News he has similar fears.
“It needs to be moved immediately because it is an accident waiting to happen,” said Councillor Kavanagh.
“It is hard to believe that it could be left like that. If it isn’t relocated as a matter of urgency someone is going to be badly injured or killed.”
Donegal County Council said it was constructing a new footpath in Crievesmith to improve the safety of pedestrians and others and to encourage active travel in lieu of cars.
The local authority said it was in talks to have the pole removed as soon as possible.
“As part of the works it was necessary to divert a number of the power lines and poles in the area,” said a spokesperson.
“All of these diversion works have been completed apart from the removal of a pole adjacent to the footpath.
“Donegal Council Council are liaising with the relevant utility to have this pole removed as soon as possible.
“Temporary traffic management measures are in place to advise road users of the presence of the pole.”
