Plenty of Donegal interest in Sigerson Cup

The ATU Donegal Sigerson Cup team will ramp up their preparations for their competition opener this week.

Maxi Curran’s side have lined up two challenge matches as they prepare to face MTU Cork on Wednesday, January 8.

ATU were first out of the hat but will not have home advantage with the game pencilled in to take place at Abbostown.

ATU Donegal faced MTU Cork at the same venue last season and lost out after extra-time.

Unsurprisingly, there is heavy Donegal representation in the ATU Donegal team and the following players have been declared to be part of the panel: Gary McGettigan (Termon), Odhran Doherty (Naomh Conaill), Jake Kelly (Glenswilly), Noah Barrett (St Eunan’s), Fionnan Coyle (Gaoth Dobhair), Paddy McElwee (Downings), Charlie Bennett (Ardara), Kevin McGettigan (Termon), Damien McGowan (Dungloe), Shane Black (Milford), Luke McGlynn (Glenfin), Oisin Caulfield (Na Rossa), Sean Breen (Sean MacCumhaills), Jack Gallagher (Aodh Ruadh), Michael Leech (Moville), Cian Rooney (Aodh Ruadh), Daniel Marley (Glenfin), Cormac Gallagher (Termon), Neil Francis Boyle (Naomh Conaill), Conal McDermott (Convoy), Kevin Jordan (Buncrana), Eoin de Burca (Gaoth Dobhair), Odhran O’Connor (Glenfin), Cormac McColgan (Naomh Pádraig, Uisce Chaoin), Cian Mulligan (Sean MacCumhaills).

Defending champions Ulster University are away to ATU Sligo in Round 1.

Ciaran Moore and Ronan McGeehin of St Eunan’s are part of the UU panel, while Matt Gillespie (Aodh Ruadh), Richard O’Rourke (Four Masters) and Kyle McNulty (Bundoran) have all been declared as part of the Sligo outfit.

Connor Roarty (Naomh Conaill) and Niall Prendiville (St Naul’s) are part of the ATU Galway set-up, and they have a tough opener at home to UL.

Downings duo Johnny McGroddy and Ronan Gallagher are involved with DCU and they will be strong favourites against MTU Kerry.

Donal Gallagher of Glenswilly will be hoping for game time with St Mary’s, and ‘The Ranch’ have a tasty Ulster derby with Queen’s University, who can call upon the services of Four Masters player Senan Quinn.

Drew McKinney of Naomh Pádraig Uisce Chaoin has a busy club schedule at the moment, but he is on the books of Maynooth University, who will take on TUS Midlands.

Bobby McGettigan from Termon has moved onto UCD this year and they face UCC in what should be a lively opener.
