Plant-based production factory to help farmers

By Dionne Meehan

DONEGAL-based seafood processing group Errigal Bay has been granted planning permission for the development of a factory to produce plant based products.

Securing planning permission from Donegal County Council last week, the large oat-milk plant will be built on the same site as a large seafood processing facility near Meenaneary in Co. Donegal.

Previously granted planning permission on the same site for a seafood cold store, the applicants said due to a change in economic and market conditions, this was no longer seen as viable.

However, in an effort to protect their existing employment numbers and to create employment growth, the company has identified the growing market in the production of plant based products.

But this new company won’t just be providing new job opportunities for the people of Donegal, it will also be supporting local farmers.

“Oats will be grown in the Finn Valley with Rapeseed oil also being sourced from within the county to support Donegal farming,” the application read.

The liquid product this factory plans to produce will be suitable for beverage use, while the solid product will be suitable for use in consumer foods, animal feed and health use.
