Plans to demolish parochial house refused by Council

by Diarmaid Doherty

DONEGAL County Council has refused a planning application which sought permission to demolish the parochial house in Kilmacrennan.

The application had been submitted by Fr Paddy Dunne, the former parish priest, on behalf of Kilmacrennan parish.

Fr Dunne had told the Donegal News that plans to demolish the former priest’s home would help address a growing parking problem at the local Scoil Cholmcille NS and St. Columba’s Church.

The building, which is over 120 years old, is in need of major repair, and hasn’t been used as a priest’s residence for some time.

However, in refusing the application, Donegal County Council said the County Development Plan seeks to protect historical structures.

“It is the opinion of the Planning Authority that to permit the proposed demolition of this historical structure would result in the premature deletion of significant historic architecture of regional importance,” a council spokesperson added.
