Plans lodged for student accommodation in Letterkenny

PLANS for student accommodation to tackle the major shortage in the Letterkenny area have been lodged with Donegal County Council by Sweeney’s Spar Express (Georgie Sweeney’s).

The proposed plans come as many students struggled to find suitable accommodation this year which resulted in many dropping out of their course and moving home.

If given the go-ahead a change of office space in the existing building in Ballyraine will provide a total of 36 beds to accommodate students.

This accommodation will also be wheelchair user friendly as a disabled bedroom is proposed with a fully disabled ensuite provided.

Two private roof gardens will also be provided with access directly from both floors for the sole use of the students.

The lodged plans also include the construction of a two storey extension to the rear of the property.

The rear extension is proposed to provide staff accommodation with an additional number of eight bed spaces on the first floor.

The ground floor will be used as storage for the existing shop.

An additional 16 parking spaces will be provided for the proposed student accommodation along with a large amenity which includes a seating area. Bicycle storage will also be provided for students to encourage bicycle use to the A.T.U.

The proposed development is within a five to ten minute walking distance from the A.T.U. which will facilitate students walking and cycling to and from college as existing footpaths link the two together.

Donegal County Council is due to make a decision on the planning application by May 18.
