Plans lodged for €1.3m enterprise centre

by Jerome Hughes

A €1.3m enterprise centre is on the cards for Carrick after Údarás na Gaeltachta applied to Donegal County Council for planning permission to build a new science and technology facility.

The planning application outlines how the development would be based at Roxborough Glebe, Banagh, Carrick.

“This project is being developed in partnership with Coiste Forbartha na Carraige on a site owned by the Carrick community. It involves the construction of four enterprise units and associated works. The planning application is the initial step in the process. An tÚdarás will seek to secure capital funding for the project if planning is successful,” according to Micheál Mac Giolla Easbuig, head of regional development with Údarás na Gaeltachta.

Údarás na Gaeltachta is responsible for the economic, social and cultural development of the Gaeltacht.

The authority endeavours to achieve this objective by funding and fostering a wide-range of enterprise development and job creation initiatives, and by supporting strategic language, cultural and community-based activities.

Mr. Mac Giolla Easbuig highlights how An tÚdarás supports a variety of sectors including food & drink, textiles, crafts, light engineering, seaweed processing, and a range of micro-enterprises.

“The proposed new units will complement the agency’s existing portfolio and will offer opportunities to create additional employment in the area in due course,” he said.

The long established agency, Coiste Forbartha na Carraige, is also heavily involved in the proposed enterprise centre project.

Its current committee, elected in 2018, has been successfully involved in the implementation of numerous community projects in recent years.

Those include an extension of a river walkway, the construction of a community playground, and the development of an outdoor gym. These projects were funded by the LEADER programme and by Donegal County Council.
