A NEW YOUTH club is being established in Falcarragh with an information meeting due to take place this evening. The youth club for fifth and six class pupils is being set up by Ionad Naomh Fionnán. It is hoped it will open in late September subject to Government restrictions and guidelines.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Rosaleen O’Brien said at the outdoor meeting they hope to set up a committee that will run the youth club.
“It is something we have seen in the locality that there is a need for. We have a lot of children in fifth and sixth class that use the playground and the playground is more suited for younger children,” said Ms O’Brien.
“When the restrictions ease we want to have the youth club ready to go. There is a youth club in Magheroarty but there is none in the Falcarragh area for children. We hope to have a youth club for the younger age children as well but we are starting first with fifth and sixth class and see how we get on.”
The centre has great facilities for a youth club including their astro turf and hall which can seat up to 500 people. Ionad Naomh Fionnán recently made contact with Donegal Youth service with a view to setting up the club. The initial contact was made through Falcarragh and Murroe National schools. A meeting was then held on July 27 which a small group of potential volunteers attended. Garda vetting through Donegal Youth service was commenced and volunteers have undertaken the Tusla Children-first safeguarding training.
If given the go ahead to open in late September it is hoped that the club will run on a Tuesday night from 6pm to 8pm subject to numbers.
The outdoor information meeting will be held this evening at 7pm at Ionad Naomh Fionnán to further inform and update the community of the plans for opening.
“We would also welcome additional volunteers aged over 18 and full training will be given,” added Rosaleen.
The meeting will be facilitated by Charlene Tinney from Donegal Youth Service. For further information contact Rosaleen on 0749165750 or ionadnf@gmail.com or see the Facebook page Ionad Naomh Fionnán Youth Club.
