Planning permission has been granted for the construction of an Islamic Cultural Centre in Letterkenny – despite residents voicing concerns over traffic congestion, safety and the close proximity of a holy well.
Applicant Letterkenny Islamic Association Clg lodged plans with Donegal County Council in November 2023, seeking planning permission for the centre at Lisnennan, Letterkenny.
Plans comprise the construction of an Islamic Cultural Centre to include the provision of a main building, consisting of ground floor and first floor mezzanine prayer hall areas (male/female), a coffee dock, sandwich bar area with all associated ancillary spaces, offices, meeting room and kitchenette.
Construction of an access road, footpaths, car parking/bicycle rack with all associated retaining structures, site works, landscaping, bin enclosure connection to the existing public sewer is contained within the planning permission application.
Locally, concerns have been expressed at the planning application but Donegal County Council has granted planning permission, subject to 18 conditions.
