THE closure of a small bridge on a busy back road in Letterkenny following Storm Éowyn has prompted a local councillor to call for “a plan of action”.
Cllr. Ciaran Brogan has called on Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District Council to take “immediate action” on the small bridge at Bonagee behind the Clanree Hotel.
Raising the issue at the monthly municipal district council meeting, he said that the bridge should have received attention a long time ago as it had deteriorated.
With the bridge now closed, he said that this “will cause huge convenience for a lot of people in the area.”
And he added: “We need a plan of action, I want special status for this, the road and bridge is closed. Hopefully we will see swift action.”
Cllr. Donal Coyle supported his motion and said that “many local people use it (the road) on a daily basis.”
He said that he was glad to see the bridge had been closed as “otherwise someone could have ended up in the water.”
He also expressed the hope that it will be repaired quickly.
Responding, Senior Executive Roads Engineer, David McIllwaine, said that following the recent storm an initial assessment was carried out on the bridge and it was considered necessary to close the bridge to traffic in the interests of public safety until a more detailed assessment is carried out.
“When the scale of the works are established, the bridge will be considered for prioritising as part of the overall bridge programme,” he added.
