JOSEPH Patton says Letterkenny Gaels hurlers have had their fair share of bad days so he was delighted to have a championship title to toast last weekend.
The Gaels dominated the Junior Final to win in style against Burt by 3-18 to 0-5.
“It was tough conditions and Burt put it up to us in the first half but we were delighted to come in ten points up.
“Burt always have good players but we knew the strategy and that was to get the ball in early. It paid off for us.
“Fair play to the boys they kept at it.
“We’re at the hurling for the last six years and we have all stuck at it and we deserved the win.”
Goals from Donal Farrelly and Brian Diver put Gaels in control at half-time.
And goalkeeper Patton came up the field in the second half to bury a penalty into the bottom corner.
Gaels had the superior skill on the day as well as a good level of fitness.
“We have worked hard.
“We have been out training in the rain and the wind.
“But fair play to the management they had us ready for the final.”
It’s far from easy to get a new hurling team off the ground in Donegal but last Saturday could be a pivotal day for the club as they look into the future.
“It’s massive progress for the club.
“We have had our bad days and been hammered in a few games.
“This has been a good year and hopefully we can push on next season and maybe make an Intermediate semi-final.
“That will be a big step up.”
