CHAIRPERSON of the Tírchonaill Commemoration Committee, Maria Doherty, has called on people to wear an Easter Lily to remember all those who gave their lives in the struggle for Irish Freedom.
“The Easter Lily was originally introduced by Cumann na mBan in 1926, on the tenth anniversary of the Easter Rising, to remember all who fought in the struggle for Irish freedom. Since then, it continues to be worn as a symbol to honour the men and women who have given their lives in the pursuit of a true Irish Republic,” said Ms Doherty.
“It is also a symbol of unity between the different traditions on our island and an emblem of hope, unity and peace for the future.
“As we stand closer than ever to the realisation of the vision of the men and women of 1916, of a true, united Irish Republic for all, it is important to remember that many of the freedoms we enjoy today are the result of several generations of struggle and sacrifice.
“The ideals, vision, courage and conviction of generations of Irish patriots continue to inspire us as we work to build a New Ireland of equality, opportunity and prosperity.
“An Ireland where no one is left behind and all are given a chance to live well and with dignity.
“I am urging everyone, young and old, to wear their Easter Lily with pride and honour those brave men and women who fought and died for our freedom and that of future generations.”
