THE 85 year-old man who died on Monday night in Rathmullan, is believed to have slipped and fallen into the water at the pier while mooring his boat.
The deceased has been named locally as Dan Gallagher of Killycoleman.
Gardai were called to the pier around 10.55 last night and are investigating the circumstances of Mr Gallagher’s death, which is not being treated as suspicious.
His remains were taken to Letterkenny General Hospital where a post mortem was carried out.
A full investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The single man, who was not married, was well-known and in the area and very well respected.
Residents of the village were greatly saddened to learn of his death.
