REPAIRS to uneven paving outside St Eunan’s College got underway last week in advance of pupils returning to school for the new term.
Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh welcomed the work to allow the gateway pavement to be reopened making the whole area safer for students entering and exiting the school.
Council Roads Engineer David McIlwaine advised Cllr Kavanagh this week that work was commencing and said it should take two weeks to complete.
After paving slabs began to crack and sink shortly after the one way system was completed the area had to be cordoned off.
“The college are very keen to get this fixed ASAP as students are going out on the main road to go down the back road. There was also a problem with students walking across the main road rather than going to the pedestrian crossing provided.
“Teaching staff and caretakers had to police this every day at lunchtime and in the evening to make them use the proper crossing, this has now been addressed by providing new railings on each side of the road, I previously asked to get this done at the request of the college principal.
“It shows the importance of having snags on these projects addressed by the contractor and dealt with in a timely fashion,” Cllr Kavanagh said.
