There was joy for Paul Durcan in Croke Park today, as he helped Ballyboden St Enda’s get past Castlebar Mitchels and land the coveted Andy Merrigan Cup.
Durcan – who transferred to the Dublin club from Four Masters last year – travelled from Qatar for the game and played a huge role for his team.
Ballyboden made a blistering start and goals from Colm Basquel and Andrew Kerin (penalty) put them into the ascendancy. Durcan pulled off a stunning save from Castlebar’s Neil Lydon and his side led by 2-5 to 0-3 at the break.
The Dublin club closed the game out in the second half with some brilliant defending and won on a scoreline of 2-14 to 0-7.
Durcan’s cousin Robbie McDaid also had an impressive game for the victors, as did Dublin star Michael Darragh Macauley, whose late father Michael hailed from Lettermacaward.
After a fine showing in GAA headquarters, Donegal fans will hope that Durcan will return home in the summer and don the number one jersey for his county.
