Pat the Cope welcomes My Little Library Initiative 2026

DONEGAL TD Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher has warmly welcomed the launch of the My Little Library Initiative 2026.

The announcement was made by Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley and Minister of State, Jerry Buttimer.

Deputy Gallagher described it as a wonderful investment in children, families, and the future of literacy in Ireland.

He said: “I am delighted to welcome the continuation of the My Little Library Initiative for 2026. This programme has already proven its value in supporting young children as they take the important step from pre‑school into primary school.

“Encouraging a love of reading from an early age is one of the greatest gifts we can offer our children, and this initiative does exactly that.”

Deputy Gallagher highlighted the importance of the scheme for communities across Donegal, noting the vital role played by local libraries.

“Our libraries in Donegal – including the excellent facilities in Dungloe, Gweedore, Twin Towns, and across the county – are at the heart of community life.

“They provide safe, welcoming spaces where children can explore books, stories and learning. I know that library staff in Donegal take great pride in supporting families, and this initiative will further strengthen those connections.”

Deputy Gallagher also praised the collaborative effort behind the programme.

“The partnership between the Department of Children, Disability and Equality, the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, and Local Government Ireland ensures that every child, no matter where they live, has access to this opportunity. It is particularly important for rural counties like Donegal, where local libraries play such a central role in community development.”

He encouraged all families with children starting primary school this September to visit their local library.

“I would strongly encourage parents and guardians to call into their nearest library – whether in Dungloe or any of our Donegal branches – to pick up the free book bag and consider joining the library if they haven’t already. It is a simple step that can make a lasting difference in a child’s educational journey.”

The My Little Library book bags, available in both English and Irish, include books on starting school, making friends and managing big emotions, along with helpful resources for parents. Bags are now available in all local libraries and throughout the summer.
