THE bid to become the next Uachtarán na hEireann (President of Ireland) will begin officially in September when nominations will be finalised, and among the potential contenders is our very own Fianna Fáil TD and Dungloe-man Pat the Cope Gallagher.
Speculation began to grow at the end of last week when several local media outlets reported that grassroots party members are backing him for the party nomination.
So what’s behind the speculation?
Speaking to the Donegal News yesterday afternoon from Carrickfinn Airport, where he was about to board the plane for the GAA semi-final at Croke Park, Deputy Gallagher said: “I hadn’t given it any thought until last week when it appeared in the media. I have since been inundated with calls of support both in Donegal and around the country and am now giving it serious consideration.”
Deputy Gallagher brings to the table an extensive career in public service.
He has been elected four times as a TD for Donegal, including his current term, and has served two terms as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP).
His tenure as MEP spanned from 1994 to 2002 and again from 2009 to 2014, representing constituencies that covered a broad geographic area, giving him a notable national profile.
This broad national recognition, combined with his strong local support, positions him well for a presidential run.
“Whether it’s myself or someone else, Fianna Fáil must have a candidate in this election,” he said “and I will always answer the party call when it’s made.”
Fianna Fáil have not fielded a candidate since they nominated twice successful former president Mary McAleese, who served from 1997 to 2011.
Deputy Gallagher confirmed that he has received the backing of several public representatives, though, as of yet, has not had formal discussions with anyone nationally.
When asked about the increasingly negative tone of recent presidential campaigns, which have unfortunately been marked by personal smear attacks, Deputy Gallagher responded: “Recent campaigns have unfortunately seen a rise in negativity. If I enter the race, I intend to campaign with dignity, fairness and respect for all involved, like I carry out all my work.”
On what kind of President he would aim to be, Deputy Gallagher quipped: “I won’t get too ahead of myself yet, come back to me when the campaign officially kicks off.”
