THE former Vice-President of Sinn Féin who was the only Donegal voice in the historic Good Friday Agreement talks 25 years ago which ended decades of violence in Northern Ireland, has been honoured at a special night in Letterkenny.
Pat Doherty and his wife, Mary, were honoured for a “lifetime of Republican struggle” at the gathering in Mount Errigal Hotel on Saturday.
The Carrigart couple were surrounded by more than 500 well-wishers, who travelled from all over the country, as well as England, Scotland and America for the event.
The celebrations honoured Mr Doherty as a person who “consistently demonstrated” his commitment to achieving peace and reconciliation in Ireland.
His significant role in the Good Friday Agreement talks saw Mr Doherty use his powerful dialogue skills to help reach a deal.
“Throughout his tenure as Vice President of Sinn Féin, Pat Doherty consistently demonstrated his commitment to achieving peace and reconciliation in Ireland.
“He played a pivotal role in the historic Good Friday Agreement and his ability to foster dialogue and build bridges across communities was instrumental in reaching a consensus, demonstrating his deep-rooted belief in the power of dialogue and negotiation,” said a spokesperson for Donegal Sinn Féin.
“Pat’s ability to navigate the often-challenging landscape of peace negotiations showcased his skilful diplomacy and unwavering dedication to finding resolutions that brought lasting benefits to all.”
The party spokesperson added that Mr Doherty’s political career was characterised by his “unwavering advocacy for social justice and equality”.
“He championed the rights of marginalised communities and worked tirelessly to address issues such as poverty, discrimination, and inequality.
“Pat recognised the importance of creating an inclusive society where everyone, regardless of their background, could thrive and contribute.
His efforts to tackle social and economic disparities resonated with the Irish people and solidified his reputation as a compassionate and empathetic leader.”
The event included a discussion on Pat and Mary’s importance to the party and speeches by party leader Mary Lou McDonald and Pat Doherty himself.
Video messages from incoming First Minister Michelle O’Neill and former party leader, Gerry Adams were also played.
As well as focusing on the lifetime of contributions made by the Doherty’s, the addresses looked to the future, to upcoming political campaigns and to bringing about a united Ireland.
Other attendees at the event included important figures in the party such as Martin Ferris, Danny Morrison, Michelle Gildernew MP, Mitchel McLaughlin, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD, Pearse Doherty TD, Matt Carthy TD, David Cullinane TD, Mairead Farrell TD, Kathleen Funchion TD, Ruairí Ó Murchú TD, Rose Conway Walsh TD, Martina Anderson, Gerry Kelly MLA, Seán Crowe TD, Conor Murphy MLA, Maolíosa McHugh MLA, Nicola Brogan MLA, Declan McAleer MLA, Darren O’Rourke TD, Alex Maskey MLA and the family of the late Martin McGuinness.
The number of people in attendance and the speed in which the event sold out is testament to the high esteem that the couple and their family are held within Sinn Féin and beyond.
The organising committee have thanked all those that attended on the night or contributed in any way.
They also thanked the staff of the Mount Errigal Hotel for making the occasion such a memorable night.
