PARENTS are afraid to let their children off outside a school for fear that they could be hit by speeding cars – that was the claim made by Cllr. Liam Blaney this week.
He was referring to the situation outside Kilmacrennan National School where he said that cars “are flying by” and he felt that the only solution to slow traffic is to install ramps.
The issue was raised by Cllr. Michael McBride who tabled a motion calling on Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District Council to “explore all possibilities” for traffic calming – essentially speed reductions – for vehicles approaching the school from the Churchill side.
Cllr. Blaney, who had a similar motion before the meeting, felt that even if they put in temporary ramps it would be better than having nothing.
A suggestion was also made to see if the council could use the old temporary ramps that had been in place in Newtowncunningham, and redeploy them and install them in Kilmacrennan.
Council officials are to look at the situation again.
Councillors heard that while there is currently no funding for works at this location, an application has been submitted for Community Recognition funding.
