Packie Bonner’s Italia ’90 save voted top Irish moment

PACKIE Bonner’s penalty save at the Italia ’90 World Cup has been voted the favourite Irish moment ever, according to a new survey.

One in five people (21 per cent) of those who took part voted for the Burtonport native’s save against Romania.

Other favourite moments included the vote to legalise same-sex marriage in 2016 in which 17 per cent voted for while another 17 per cent voted for Riverdance. The O’Donovan brothers winning an Olympic medal was another favourite with 13 per cent voting for this.

The research was commissioned by Brady Family Ham as the brand launches its ‘Low Food Miles’ campaign this month, celebrating its Irishness and the fact that it is 100% Irish, always.

One in ten voters would like to spend St Patrick’s Day with Leo Varadkar while 11 per cent of voters said they would like to spend it with Daniel O’Donnell.

Glenroe and Father Ted were ranked joint number one as most Irish TV shows ever made. The Irish sense of humour is what people miss most about living away from Ireland while 25 per cent of us miss Irish food.

One in ten of us credit the ham and cheese toastie as the ultimate Irish comfort food. Bacon and cabbage is considered the ultimate Irish comfort food, followed by a Sunday roast (23 per cent) and stew (21 per cent).

The research found that one in ten claim to speak Irish at least once a week with females (69 per cent) claiming to speaking Irish more often than males (65 per cent).
