Over €1 million spent on renting prefabs for Donegal schools

by Kate Heaney

THE cost of renting prefab buildings for schools in Donegal has cost €1,098,888 this year to the beginning of December and the figure is expected to increase next year.

That is according to Minister for Education Norma Foley who, in replying to a Parliamentary Question(PQ) in early December revealed that the expected overall spend on school prefabs this year would be around €28 million. This was the amount spent on prefabs in 2022.

“Currently there are 455 schools renting prefab accommodation, 323 primary schools and 132 post primary schools,” the Minister said replying to a PQ from Labour TD Aodhán Ó Ríordáin on December 5.

While the reply does not give a breakdown of the number of prefab buildings used in each county it does reveal that the cost in Donegal from last year until the beginning of December this year rose by €186.252.

Comparisons with other counties for the year to date shows that Sligo expenditure on school prefabs was €416,553; Leitrim €202,817; Cavan €398,501 and Dublin €6 million.
