Thousands of ESB customers in Donegal without power

By Diarmaid Doherty

Update: ESB crews are this evening working to restore power to thousands of homes and businesses across the county.

By 4pm, over 11,000 customers in the county were without supply with Storm Amy causing widespread disruption across the county.

There were power outages reported in different parts of the county with over 2,600 without supply in Derrybeg, over 2,000 affected in the Glenties area and also in Donegal Town and over 2,400 without power in Milford.

There are power outages too in Dungloe, Killybegs and Ballyshannon.

However, by 5pm more customers have been impacted with more outages right around the county including Letterkenny and parts of Inishowen.

More power outages are likely as the heavy winds continue to batter most parts of the county.

ESB crews are currently working to repair the faults.

Donegal was earlier upgraded to a status red weather warning between 4pm  and 6pm today, as Storm Amy is forecast to bring extremely strong and gusty southwest winds.

Met Éireann has warned that the storm could cause fallen trees, power line damage and dangerous travelling conditions.

There is also a risk of structural damage and wave overtopping along the coast.
