THE community in Falcarragh have found themselves again without water this morning. This is the second time in two weeks that the area has been subject to water outages with Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr Seamus Ó Domhnaill describing the situation as “beyond belief”.
Irish Water is due to carry out work on the mains in October however, Cllr Ó Domhnaill said it is unacceptable that they will have to wait until then. He said thousands upon thousands of euro is being lost in revenue as local businesses are being forced to close when the outages occur. The last outage was on April 11 when the utility company said: “Irish Water has identified critical mains with repeated burst history in this area, and has applied for those mains to be replaced under the next phase of the Water Network Programme Mains Rehabilitation Programme.”
Cllr Ó Domhnaill said: “Friday is the busiest day in Falcarragh and it is an important day for the businesses. They have been forced to close because of the ineptitude of Irish Water, it is disgraceful.”
Meanwhile Fine Gael Local Election Candidate, Michael McClafferty said the people of Falcarragh need answers.
“Falcarragh is a market town and Friday is their busiest trading day – already this morning there are businesses that have had to close their doors and there are others praying that the issue will be fixed within the next hour that will enable them to stay open,” he said.
“We need answers from Irish Water. This has become a regular occurrence for the people of Falcarragh and the surrounding area and it needs immediate attention. Businesses can’t wait until the end of 2019 for works to commence.”
