THE people of Donegal did not let the weekend’s bad weather put them off as they rallied together in huge numbers for this year’s Relay For Life.
The grounds of Letterkenny Institute where packed all Saturday and Sunday and Cancer survivors, families and friends of people who lost their battle, gathered together to celebrate their loved ones memories and raise much-needed funds.
On Saturday night the crowds gathered as the lights of remembrance were lit in the centre of the pitch as people formed a circle, standing in unity.
The whole event had been filled with a wonderful spirit, despite the lack of sunshine, compared to last year’s inaugural event.
There was also lots of entertainment in-store, something for all tastes, from Country Star Robert Mizzell, trad supergroup Sontas and Donegal’s own Moya Brennan who made the trip for the second year in a row to perform while the lanterns were lit.
Moya, who performed with husband Tim and their talent children Aisling and Pól, said: “It was nice to be here last year for the first Relay For Life event and I was thrilled to be asked to come again this year. We were playing when they were lighting the candles, which is a very poignant time. I am thrilled that I had the time to come up again this weekend.
“I love doing anything to be there for people, if you don’t have that, you don’t have anyting. No matter what you are doing, if you can’t give, even a little, what’s the point. That part will always be very important to me.
“Cancer is a disease that affects everybody and so it’s really important to show support and be there for people. All you need sometimes is a hand or a shoulder to be there with you through hard times.
“If you have lost somebody to cancer you know what’s that like.
“Everyone is so happy to be here at Relay For Life and the bad weather has not dampened their spirits which is fantastic to see,” said Moya.
