WITH the first count now well underway in the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny, tally figures suggest that presidential candidate Catherine Connolly is set to receive the majority of votes in Donegal.
Tally figures show that Connolly received 75 per cent of the county’s votes, while Heather Humphreys received 20 per cent of votes and Jim Gavin received four per cent.
Commenting on this, 100% Redress TD, Charles Ward, said he is delighted for Connolly.
“We want change and we need change,” he said.
“We need to hold the government accountable and make them accountable.
“Now finally, we have someone possibly going in that could be the start of change.
“This is just the first step.”

Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil TD, Pat the Cope Gallagher said the outcome comes as no surprise to him.
“I was getting a very clear indication from constituents that they were going to vote for Catherine Connolly now that our candidate Jim Gavin was out of the race,” he said.
“It is very obvious that a lot of people who traditionally voted Fianna Fáil voted for Catherine Connolly.
“Both Heather and Catherine had a good campaign.
“I think a lot of people made up their mind during the course of the local and national interviews that they did.”
The results of the first count are expected soon.
